Between Art and Design
Sven Voelker works as designer, author and artist in Berlin and teaches as professor at the University of Art and Design Burg Giebichenstein in Halle.
During his academic studies at the University of Art in Bremen and at Middlesex University in London, Voelker developed an interdisciplinary approach to Design and later in his own Berlin based studio created very different kind of projects for clients such as Suzuki, BMW or Volkswagen. For the japanese car and motorcycle manufacturer he developed the global corporate design
In 2004 he was appointed to a professorship at the University of Art and Design in Karlsruhe and head of its communication design department before going to Halle in 2010. There he publishes Some Magazine together with his students and also with them organises the anual Some Conference, Both projects are positioned between the fields of art and design.
In 2010 the book „Go Faster“ about the graphic design of racing cars was published at Gestalten and together with philosopher Peter Sloterdijk he was author of the book „Der Welt über die Straße helfen“ at Wilhelm Fink Publishers.
His latest projects are a combination of graphic design, journalism and art. In 2011 together with his brother Nils Voelker he created the project „Captured - A Homage to Light and Air“ at MADE in Berlin. The series „Auto Reverse“ with Kay Michalak is currently on show at ZKM Art Museum in Karlsruhe.
The new project „Haven’t Seen Myself in Ages“ will be exhibited in 2012 in Leipzig, Johannesburg, Flø, Basel, Bern and Prague.
